Client Work: A Layered Maxi Dress for Lore
Lore and I met through our husbands. They have known each other for years and after reconnecting, it turned out that Lore and i get along great! About a year ago, she came to me looking for a comfortable and elegant maxi dress. Something she could wear while taking care for her little kid and to dress up to go to a wedding. She had a lot of inspirational pictures and silhouettes she liked, and after a couple sketches, we landed on this idea of a layered maxi dress.
This was one of the rare occasions where the client and I went fabric shopping together; They were visiting and there was a fabric market in town, so we thought: let's see if we can find anything we like! Lore really likes this green/blue hues and we found them in the most beautiful rayon jersey. It's so fluid and has so much beautiful drape, truly a joy. Not so much a joy to work with, as you can see from this snapshot. Yes, this had to be tamed into straps!
But yes: after 10 years of sewing, I got some skills under my belt!
As far as design goes the front neckline is scooped, with a deeper scoop at the back (forgot to take those pictures). The back scoop neck ends just above the bra band. The skirt part of the dress runs all the way up to the top and the shorter, wider layer is an overlay. Lore wanted to wear the dress with flat sandals, so we decided on a floor-sweeping length. There's nothing as summery as a floor-sweeping layered maxi dress!
She might look a bit melancholic, but she assured me she liked the dress! She even wore it to our wedding and looked absolutely smashing!
